Atlanta United has announced Ronny Deila as the new head coach, marking a significant move for the club. The announcement comes amid a busy period for Atlanta United, which includes hiring a new sporting director and other major developments.
Ronny Deila, known for his success in various leagues, was introduced during a press conference held over Zoom. Club president and CEO Garth Lagerwey praised Deila's track record: “Ronny’s been excellent wherever he’s been.”
Chris Henderson, chief soccer officer and sporting director, highlighted the importance of collaboration with Deila: “Today is about celebrating Ronny.”
In his opening remarks, Deila expressed enthusiasm for joining Atlanta United: “I’m very excited and proud. Today is a big day for me to join a club like Atlanta United."
Deila emphasized the need for trust within the leadership team composed of himself, Lagerwey, and Henderson: "We have to trust each other and we have to work with each other and build something special together."
Known for winning titles in different countries including the 2021 MLS Cup, Deila aims to instill an offensive and championship-focused identity at Atlanta United. He also credited interim coach Rob Valentino for fostering team spirit.
Deila plans to bring two assistants from Al-Wahda—Kenny Miller and Elliott Parish—as part of his coaching staff. He stressed empowering both staff and players while creating an environment where players feel safe, important, and enjoy their roles.
While not yet in Atlanta physically, Deila looks forward to engaging with fans through communication and social interaction: "It’s my job to inform and educate the way we want to do it."
