Atlanta United's offseason moves have been recognized as the best among Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs, according to a survey conducted by The Athletic. The survey, which was published on March 7, gathered opinions from 21 MLS executives. Atlanta United topped the list with eight votes, significantly ahead of other teams that received three votes each.
The club was noted for its significant spending during the offseason, not only on players but also in its front office. The hiring of Chris Henderson as chief soccer officer and Ronny Deila as head coach were highlighted as key factors influencing executive votes.
Henderson emerged as a leading figure in the category of best coaching or front office hire. His previous collaboration with Atlanta United's president and CEO Garth Lagerwey at Seattle Sounders contributed to this perception. At his introductory press conference, Lagerwey described Henderson as "one of the most decorated executives in MLS history." Henderson has secured nine titles over his 17-year career in MLS before joining Atlanta in December.
In the survey results, Henderson garnered 9.5 votes out of the total polled. The half vote resulted from one executive considering both Deila and Henderson's appointments collectively. Deila himself received 1.5 votes for best offseason hire.
Regarding player signings, Atlanta United also ranked highly. Their designated player deals stood out under the category for best winter move (signing, trade, or sale). Miguel Almirón's signing tied with FC Cincinnati’s acquisition of Evander to replace Luciano Acosta for most votes. Emmanuel Latte Lath’s signing followed closely behind.
Overall, Atlanta United secured seven votes in this category—more than any other team.
Additionally, Mateusz Klich’s acquisition was recognized under best value contract in MLS. He joined Atlanta from D.C. United in exchange for their first-round pick in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft while maintaining his designated player spot with D.C., offering Atlanta a DP-caliber player at a senior roster salary.
As a result of these strategic moves, six clubs are predicted to be likely contenders for trophies this season, including Atlanta United. Two executives foresee an MLS Cup victory for them while another two anticipate they will win the Supporters’ Shield.
Upcoming opponents Inter Miami CF and FC Cincinnati also received high predictions in these categories.
