Atlanta United Vice President Carlos Bocanegra has been inducted into National Soccer Hall of Fame.
"Bocanegra assembled one of the most prolific attacks in league history, as Atlanta also became just the second team in MLS history to produce back-to-back 70-goal seasons, led by the 2018 MLS MVP Josef Martinez, who broke the league’s single-season scoring record that year," the team said in a news release.
Bocanegra retired as a player in 2014 after a career that last 15 years in England, France, Scotland, Spain and the United States, the news release said.
He was hired by Atlanta United as technical director on March 2, 2015.
"Bocanegra helped pilot Atlanta to one of the best expansion seasons in Major League Soccer history, as the club became the first team to qualify for MLS Cup Playoffs since 2009," the news release said.
In 2018, the team won MLS championship.
"Atlanta followed its record-breaking 2018 championship season by winning the U.S. Open Cup and becoming the first MLS team to win the Campeones Cup in 2019," the news release said. "The team has qualified for the Concacaf Champions League in 2019, 2020 and 2021. In addition to its two trophies in 2019, Atlanta set an MLS record for most points for a defending champion."
Bocanegra is the 305th person to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
He was chosen in the 2020 class from a list of 42 finalists, the news release said. The 2020 ceremony was postponed last year because of COVID-19, according to the news release.
