Atlanta United is set to compete in the 2025 Leagues Cup, aiming for more than just a Supporters’ Shield or an MLS Cup this season. The tournament, now in its third year, will see Atlanta United face three Liga MX teams with hopes of advancing to the knockout rounds and potentially adding to their trophy collection.
The Leagues Cup features a unique format where both MLS and Liga MX send 18 teams each. These teams are divided into Eastern and Western regions and further grouped into sets of three MLS teams and three Liga MX teams based on tiers determined by their previous season's points totals. Atlanta United is matched against Pumas (Tier 1), Necaxa (Tier 2), and Atlas (Tier 3).
Pumas concluded last season with a combined total of 58 points in the Apertura and Clausura phases of Liga MX. Necaxa ended with 42 points, slightly ahead of Atlanta United's tally from last year's league campaign. Atlas completed their season with 36 points.
The competition follows a No Draws format during Phase One, akin to a group stage. Matches tied after 90 minutes proceed directly to penalty shootouts, bypassing extra time. Points are allocated as follows: one point for a regulation draw, two points for a penalty shootout win, and three points for a regulation win.
Following these initial matches, the top four MLS and Liga MX teams advance to the knockout rounds starting at the quarterfinals. Teams are seeded within their leagues from first to fourth place, ensuring interleague play continues through at least the quarterfinals. Knockout matches consist of one leg each and go straight to penalties if tied after regular time.
Atlanta United faces significant opportunities in this tournament with two home games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and another nearby in Orlando. The team has not previously faced any of its Leagues Cup opponents competitively, posing a new challenge for head coach Ronny Deila.
The timing of the tournament amidst the MLS regular season emphasizes fitness and squad health as crucial factors. Last season saw both of Atlanta United's Leagues Cup fixtures end in penalties; this year offers at least one additional match with potential for more advancement in the knockout stages.
With new signings and leadership under Deila, Atlanta United seeks to make history during the 2025 season through their performance in the Leagues Cup.
