Ronny Deila has encouraged Atlanta to embrace the dynamic changes at Atlanta United, following the club's announcement of a new designated player. On February 4, Atlanta United revealed the signing of Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough FC in the English Football League Championship. The Ivory Coast international joins with a contract extending through the 2028 MLS season, with an option for 2029.
Chris Henderson, Atlanta United’s chief soccer officer and sporting director, described Latte Lath as potentially one of Major League Soccer's fastest players. "He’s a forward with excellent pace and good goal-scoring instincts," Henderson said. "His ability to stretch the field will add another dimension to our attack."
Latte Lath was notable for his performance in England's second-highest division, leading Middlesbrough in scoring during the 2024-25 season and tying for third-most goals in the Championship. His versatility is evident in his ability to score using both feet and his head.
Henderson emphasized Latte Lath's potential as he enters what are considered prime years for a professional athlete. “At 26 years old, he’s entering the prime years of his career and has already shown his goal-scoring ability in multiple leagues in Europe,” Henderson noted.
Before joining Middlesbrough, Latte Lath had a successful stint at Atalanta during his youth career and later excelled at St. Gallen in Switzerland's Super League. He scored consistently across all competitions for Middlesbrough, achieving double-digit goals each season.
In addition to his club success, Latte Lath made his debut for Côte d'Ivoire during World Cup qualifiers last summer. His leadership qualities extend beyond scoring; he is multilingual, speaking five languages which could foster team cohesion on and off the field.
Atlanta United filled its two open designated player spots by also bringing back Miguel Almirón on January 30. Both Almirón and Latte Lath are expected to lead on-field efforts while setting an example for their teammates.
