The Atlanta Falcons returned to Georgia early Tuesday morning after securing a victory against the Las Vegas Raiders. Later that day, head coach Raheem Morris addressed the media in his weekly press conference, discussing the quarterback situation with Kirk Cousins.
Morris did not confirm whether Cousins would continue as the starting quarterback for Atlanta. "I think we got to go through the process," Morris stated. He noted that this week presents different circumstances due to their recent game and short preparation time.
The Falcons ended a four-game losing streak by defeating the Raiders 15-9. Cousins completed 11 of 17 passes for 112 yards, including a touchdown pass to Drake London. However, he also threw an interception, marking his fifth consecutive game with a pick.
"We didn't play particularly well at the quarterback position," Morris admitted. He emphasized the need for improvement ahead of their next game against the New York Giants.
Atlanta currently holds a 7-7 record and is one game behind Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC South race. The Falcons have already defeated Tampa Bay twice this season, giving them an advantage if they match records by season's end.
Cousins' performance has been under scrutiny due to his league-high 16 interceptions over recent games. First-round draft pick Michael Penix Jr., seen as a future prospect, remains on standby but was not intended to start immediately.
"We talked about bringing in Kirk, giving us an immediate chance to win," Morris explained regarding their strategy with Cousins and Penix Jr. "You could never say there's a downfall to turning it over to somebody that you put a lot of investment into."
Whether there will be changes remains uncertain as Morris reiterated: "We're going to do whatever's best for us to win as many games we can win this season."
