Atlanta United's backup goalkeeper Quentin Westberg has announced his retirement from professional soccer. The decision comes after Atlanta United's defeat in the Eastern Conference Semifinals of the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs on November 24.
Westberg began his professional career in 2006 with ES Troyes AC, a French club in Ligue 1. His career spanned several countries, including France and Norway, before he transitioned to Major League Soccer.
In 2019, Westberg became the first-choice goalkeeper for Toronto FC, where he played for four seasons. During his tenure at Toronto FC, he appeared in 68 matches and achieved ten clean sheets. His save percentage remained above 60.7 percent throughout those seasons.
Westberg joined Atlanta United in December 2022 on a one-year contract and made six MLS starts in 2023, securing one clean sheet. He re-signed with Atlanta for another year through the 2024 season.
Although Westberg did not play as many minutes during his time with Atlanta United, the 38-year-old contributed experience and leadership alongside captain Brad Guzan at the goalkeeping position. Off the field, they engaged their families in a friendly "Family Feud" competition featured on Atlanta United's YouTube channel.
A native of France and fluent French speaker, Westberg assisted teammates by translating when needed. Notably, he translated for Jamal Thiaré during a post-match press conference following Thiaré's two-goal performance against Inter Miami in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
Westberg is now the second player from Atlanta United to retire from professional soccer this year; Dax McCarty also announced his retirement after a lengthy 19-year MLS career.
