Atlanta United continues to showcase its ability to develop talented young players, particularly in the left-back position. Dominik Chong Qui, a 17-year-old from Alpharetta, Georgia, is the latest addition to a line of successful players, following George Bello and Caleb Wiley.
Chong Qui recently signed a first-team contract, expressing his gratitude during his first media session since the signing on April 4. His first MLS start on March 29 against New York City FC marked him as the second-youngest starter in the club's history.
“I just try to put faith that I prepared as well as I possibly could have to play the game,” Chong Qui said. His age does not deter him as he competes with seasoned players. He views his current busy schedule positively, with matches across different levels enhancing his development. “It's been it's been really nice,” he stated, appreciating the opportunities presented to him.
Standing at 5-foot-10, Chong Qui's physical talent complements his burgeoning skills. "I stayed connected to the team, to center backs, and I was able to distribute the ball as best I can," he noted, pinpointing areas for improvement.
Despite a pre-existing agreement to sign with the MLS by 2026, early performance led to his early promotion, reducing contract length but making him eligible for the 2025 season. With Pedro Amador and Ronald Hernández ahead of him, Chong Qui remains determined. "I need to focus on how I work, and to work hard to help myself get the chance to be playing this year,” he commented.
Chong Qui acknowledges the mentorship from peers and is eager to learn, hinting at future discussions with predecessors like Wiley, who joined Chelsea FC in 2024. As Chief Soccer Officer Chris Henderson highlighted, "the most successful teams in MLS have depth at every single position."
Chong Qui is committed to leveraging his work ethic to cement his role. “I'm just happy that the coach can see that I work as hard as I can,” he added.
