Atlanta United is gearing up for its first road match of the season against regional rival Charlotte FC. Head coach Ronny Deila emphasized the importance of preparation, likening it to "crushing some eggs to make an omelet." This metaphor underscores the team's rigorous training sessions earlier in the week.
On Thursday, Atlanta United held a lighter practice session, featuring playful activities such as a relay race. The aim was to ensure players are well-rested ahead of Saturday's derby at Bank of America Stadium. The match promises to be significant, with a national broadcast and early kickoff time at 2:15 p.m.
Deila expressed optimism about securing a victory in his first away game as head coach, saying it would be "fantastic." Center back Derrick Williams agreed, calling it "a massive boost."
Saturday’s challenge will not be easy. Atlanta United faces a rejuvenated Charlotte FC team led by Dean Smith. The opponents have strengthened their attack by bringing back Spanish midfielder Pep Biel and signing Wilfried Zaha from the English Premier League.
Zaha is considered one of MLS's top newcomers this year and may debut against Atlanta after missing Charlotte's opening draw with Seattle Sounders. Containing him will require organization and teamwork from Atlanta's defense.
Derrick Williams highlighted the importance of collective defending: “If you look at the most successful teams in the world, they don’t defend with just six or seven.” Meanwhile, Stian Gregersen's speed offers an additional defensive asset for Atlanta.
Offensively, Atlanta United boasts dynamic talents like Emmanuel Latte Lath and Miguel Almirón. In their recent 3-2 win over CF Montréal, Latte Lath scored twice on his debut, earning MLS Team of the Matchday honors.
Despite their victory, Deila noted areas for improvement from that performance. Montreal had more possession and numerous shots in the second half. To achieve success against Charlotte FC, extending their strong start into a full 90-minute effort will be crucial.
Deila summarized: “We know what we’re going to meet; it’s just how we execute.”
