A recent study by engineers at Georgia Tech indicates that hemp fiber insulation could become a viable industry in the United States. The researchers suggest that this product could create jobs, establish a manufacturing base, and contribute to more environmentally friendly homes and buildings.

Buildings are responsible for about one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. The transition to hemp-based insulation products could significantly reduce these emissions. According to some estimates, using hemp products might decrease the environmental impact of insulation by 90% or more.

The research from Georgia Tech is among the first to assess the potential for expanding U.S. production and availability of hemp-based insulation materials. These findings have been published in the Journal of Cleaner Production.

For further details on their research, visit the College of Engineering website.
