Atlanta United is focusing on refining its defensive strategies after a narrow 3-2 victory over CF Montréal. Stian Gregersen, a key player for the team, emphasized the importance of communication on the field, especially in light of the noise from over 65,000 fans during their opening match.
“It’s difficult when it’s 60,000,” Gregersen remarked about maintaining effective communication amidst such a large crowd. He noted that improving discipline and organization is crucial as they prepare to face Charlotte FC in their next match. “We [were] a little bit open in the middle, [so] we have to stay more compact … If we can work with that, it will be much, much better.”
Coach Ronny Deila's training sessions have been loud and focused on enhancing communication skills among players. The emphasis has been on maintaining pressure throughout matches to regain possession quickly. However, this strategy proved challenging against CF Montréal as fatigue set in during the second half.
“First half was top. But we always want to go and put pressure on them," Gregersen explained. "That maybe punished us a little bit in the second half because we [did] that every time."
Gregersen also praised new team members for increasing competitiveness within the squad. Edwin Mosquera's goal was highlighted as an example of this newfound competitive spirit. Matt Edwards received commendation for his fearless performance during his first start with the first team.
Looking ahead to their match against rivals Charlotte FC, Atlanta United is strategizing how best to handle forward Patrick Agyemang's physical presence on the field. “We have to be tight with him, one in behind and one in front,” Gregersen said.
The upcoming derby match promises intensity and excitement as Atlanta United seeks to maintain its winning momentum while implementing defensive improvements.
“We have to focus on what we’re going to perform,” Gregersen stated about facing Charlotte FC. “Of course it’s a derby … of course it’s a little bit extra for us also to play against them."
Despite some areas needing improvement from their previous game, securing three points remains Atlanta United's primary goal.
“[It was the] first game, and most important is winning the game,” Gregersen concluded.
