The return of Miguel Almirón to Atlanta United was met with a warm reception at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The anticipation had been building, and Brad Guzan, Almirón's teammate from the club’s 2018 championship run, had predicted the enthusiastic welcome.
Guzan expressed his thoughts before the match, stating, "It puts a smile on my face because he certainly deserves the reception that I know he's going to get." He emphasized Almirón's excitement about returning to represent Atlanta United once again.
Since Almirón's departure for England, there have been significant changes within the team. New players have joined, and Ronny Deila has taken over as head coach. Garth Lagerwey and Chris Henderson now lead the front office in their respective roles.
Despite these changes, Almirón remains consistent in his style and demeanor. Known for his energetic play and cheerful personality, he contributed significantly to Atlanta United's 3-2 victory over CF Montréal in their season opener. His assist marked his 50th goal contribution in MLS regular-season play.
After more than 90 minutes on the field—a duration he is not accustomed to—Almirón left to thunderous applause when substituted during stoppage time. Reflecting on his return, he said, “I always try to give my best. Today, it felt really good to play here. I'm really happy to come back and play here in Atlanta."
A notable change since his previous tenure is Almirón’s growing family. His son Francesco accompanied him onto the pitch before kickoff amidst loud cheers from fans.
Almirón shared this moment with his family and described it as a feeling of joy and happiness: "[It’s a] feeling of mostly joy, happiness. Also just being able to share with my family."
His homecoming was not only a personal milestone but also an opportunity for him to introduce Atlanta to his son.
