Atlanta United began their 2025 season with a victory over CF Montréal, marking the start of the Ronny Deila era. The match, held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, ended with a 3-2 scoreline in favor of Atlanta United.
The opening goal came from Emmanuel Latte Lath in his debut match. A corner kick by Saba Lobjanidze was headed into the net by Latte Lath in the 42nd minute. CF Montréal equalized shortly after halftime when Nathan Saliba scored off a cross from Prince Owusu.
Latte Lath scored again in the 63rd minute after Miguel Almirón assisted Ronald Hernández's cross, giving Atlanta another lead. However, CF Montréal equalized once more through an Owusu goal following a George Campbell header.
The decisive moment came in the 85th minute when Edwin Mosquera scored the game-winning goal. From just outside the box and facing a defender one-on-one, he shifted to his right foot and shot into the opposite corner of the net.
Coach Ronny Deila noted that Atlanta United had nine shots in the first half compared to CF Montréal's three. Overall, Atlanta finished with 14 shots while Montréal had 12. Brad Guzan made three saves during the match.
Latte Lath impressed on his debut, living up to his reputation for speed and agility. He was one of three designated players acquired this offseason who started this match alongside Mateusz Klich and Miguel Almirón.
Almirón assisted on Mosquera's goal, marking his 50th career MLS goal contribution. Meanwhile, Guzan celebrated his milestone of making 200 regular-season appearances for Atlanta United. Matt Edwards also made his first MLS start as part of this game.
