Miguel Almirón rejoins Atlanta United after success with Newcastle

Atlanta United has made a strategic move this offseason by re-signing Miguel Almirón, a player with a successful history at the club. The team, which recently appointed Ronny Deila as head coach and Chris Henderson as sporting director, welcomes Almirón back for his second tenure in Atlanta.

Almirón, known as "Miggy" to fans, returns after previously helping Atlanta United secure victory in Major League Soccer. His last appearance in the league saw him lifting a trophy at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

During his initial time with Atlanta from 2017 to 2018, Almirón played 70 matches across all competitions, scoring 22 goals and providing 30 assists. He was recognized for his ability to set up goals and shared the club record for most assists in a single season with Julian Gressel until Thiago Almada surpassed it in 2023.

Almirón's contributions were crucial during Atlanta's victorious run to the 2018 MLS Cup. He scored once and assisted twice in their triumph over Portland Timbers before an audience of over 73,000 fans. His performances earned him individual accolades as well; he was an MVP finalist both years he played for Atlanta and made it to the MLS Best XI.

After leaving Atlanta, Almirón joined Newcastle United in the English Premier League. Over six seasons there, he participated in 186 Premier League matches and scored 23 goals. Overall, he made 223 appearances for Newcastle across all competitions.

In international play, Almirón has been a significant figure for Paraguay since his debut in 2015. With 64 appearances under his belt—57 of them starts—he has become a regular leader on the field. He was named Paraguayan Footballer of the Year multiple times and first wore the captain's armband in 2022.

Paraguay is currently striving to qualify for the FIFA World Cup scheduled for 2026. The national team is sixth in CONMEBOL standings and remains unbeaten in its last six games.
