After a snowy weekend, Atlanta United commenced their preseason at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground. The club recently appointed Ronny Deila as head coach and Chris Henderson as Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director. Both are now in Atlanta, settling into their new roles.
Returning players Brad Guzan and Derrick Williams addressed the media for the first player-led press conference of the year. "It’s always nice to see familiar faces when you come back for the first day," Guzan remarked.
The second day of training under Ronny Deila was marked by his straightforward approach and emphasis on discipline. Williams noted that Deila aims to make the team more consistent with a focus on fitness, saying, “Being the fittest team in the league would be a good thing to start off with.”
Atlanta United has added Mateusz Klich to their roster this winter. The midfielder, acquired from D.C. United, brings experience from his time at Leeds United in England's Premier League. Klich is expected to enhance Atlanta's midfield play. Guzan commented on Klich's influence: “He was a guy that made them tick and made them go.” Williams described him as one of his closest friends in football.
Preseason will include five matches leading up to their home opener against FC Dallas on February 15. Guzan emphasized the importance of building understanding within the team during this period: “As we get more fit...the quicker we can continue to build.”
Atlanta United is looking forward to continuing last year's momentum after qualifying for the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs. A rematch against Inter Miami CF awaits them early in the regular season on March 16.
"Last year gave us a bit of a taste," Williams stated, emphasizing consistency as key for success in 2025.
