FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Quarterback Kirk Cousins rarely deviates from his daily routine, a discipline that has helped him become a four-time Pro Bowler. This consistency has also benefited safety Jessie Bates III, who often joins Cousins for film sessions.

Bates first approached Cousins to watch film together during the Atlanta Falcons' offseason program. Both found the experience positive and plan to continue it through training camp and possibly beyond.

"There's a lot of game that he can pass along — and he's willing to do that as well," Bates said. "That's what's exciting about Kirk. He's one of the top quarterbacks in this league, and it's not by mistake."

Cousins is entering his 13th NFL season, with four postseason berths and multiple Pro Bowl nominations. Bates is in his seventh season, having made two playoff appearances and earning his first Pro Bowl nod last year after recording six interceptions.

"I need to get to know him more," Cousins said of Bates. "I just have a lot of respect for him as a football player, first of all, and his presence."

Both players are key communicators on their respective units, needing to diagnose information quickly during games. Their film sessions help them understand each other's perspectives on plays.

"We just always talked on the field when we're out there during OTAs," Bates said.

Bates had never worked 1-on-1 with a quarterback before but now feels comfortable breaking that barrier. Cousins has done similar work with defensive backs in the past but wishes he had started earlier in his career.

"I wish I had in Year 1, 2, 3 grabbed a DB and sat down with them," Cousins said.

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris appreciates this initiative from both players.

"When you talk about Jessie Bates and you talk about Kirk Cousins, you're talking about high-level ball," Morris said. "You want this player-led environment."
