Leagues Cup 2024 has commenced, and Atlanta United is set to host both of its matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The first opponent is MLS side D.C. United, marking the third meeting between the two teams this season. The previous encounters have been split, with each team winning on the road. Atlanta United recently secured a comeback victory against Columbus, while D.C. United clinched a 3-2 win over Minnesota.

The Leagues Cup features all MLS and Liga MX teams in a World Cup-style tournament. Club Santos Laguna completes this group, with the top two teams advancing to the Knockout stage.

Atlanta aims to carry momentum from last week's performances into the Leagues Cup. The team earned four points against NYCFC (2-2 draw) and Columbus (2-1 win). Stian Gregersen scored twice against Columbus, earning Team of the Matchday honors for his brace.

Saba Lobjanidze contributed two assists from corner kicks in that match. He leads Atlanta with six goals and seven assists this season. D.C. United’s defense has allowed an average of 2.0 goals per match, presenting an opportunity for Atlanta's attack to capitalize on Friday night.

In their previous home matchup against D.C. United, Belgium striker Christian Benteke scored a hattrick with headers off crosses, dominating Atlanta’s defense. In the return game at Audi Field, Atlanta's defense adjusted tactics and achieved a clean sheet by limiting crosses to Benteke.

Winning set pieces will be crucial for both sides of the pitch on Friday night. Atlanta broke through with two goals off corner kicks against Columbus and will need similar success against D.C. United’s tall and strong side.

Defensively, preventing free headers for Benteke or other D.C. United players will be key. Winning second balls or knockdowns from long balls will also be important as Benteke's aerial strength poses a significant threat.

Fans can watch the match on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV at 8:00 pm ET or listen via Sports Radio 92.9 The Game (English) or La Mejor – AM 1600 (Spanish).
