Mayor Andre Dickens announced a series of leadership changes within his Administration aimed at accelerating the execution of his visionary plans for the city of Atlanta. Among the appointments is LaChandra Butler Burks as the Interim Chief Operating Officer, effective May 25, 2024. Burks, who has served as Deputy Chief Operating Officer and former Interim Commissioner of the Department of Parks and Recreation, will take over from Lisa Y. Benjamin.
In response to the changes, Mayor Dickens emphasized his commitment to immediate action, stating, "My vision for an Atlanta that has safe, healthy and connected neighborhoods and access and opportunity for all residents is not a 10, 20 or 30 year goal." He expressed his gratitude to outgoing officials, including Benjamin, for their dedication to the city.
Lisa Y. Benjamin, who has been instrumental in leading city operations since Mayor Dickens took office, highlighted the achievements during her tenure, including a 21% reduction in crime and significant operational improvements across city departments. Benjamin expressed pride in the results achieved during her time as COO, stating, "We have demonstrated how city government can operate with integrity, accountability, and excellence."
Further changes include the appointment of Jan Lennon as the Interim General Manager of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Lennon, who currently serves as Deputy General Manager of Operations, brings over 25 years of experience in airport security management. She will succeed Balram 'B' Bheodari, who played a critical role in leading the airport through various challenges.
Additionally, Al Wiggins Jr. will transition from Commissioner of the Department of Public Works to Commissioner of the Department of Watershed Management, effective immediately. Kentorri Garmon will serve as the Interim Commissioner of the Department of Public Works. The Administration's priorities for Wiggins and the Department of Watershed Management include a focus on the Capital Improvement Program to enhance the city's water supply and watershed management.
In closing remarks, Commissioner Mikita K. Browning, who led the Department of Watershed Management, expressed pride in the progress made during her tenure, including accomplishments in sewer spill reduction and compliance with the City's Consent Decrees. Dickens emphasized a continued commitment to the city's growth and development under new leadership.
