Department of World Languages and Cultures Launches Career-Focused Degree Programs

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Georgia State University has created two new academic programs designed to offer a stronger focus on preparing students for workplace success.

The newly developed B.A. in World Languages and Cultures and M.A. in World Languages and Applied Intercultural Studies offers an innovative curriculum with experiential learning opportunities.

Both programs are currently accepting applications for students and will start in the fall of 2023.

Leslie L. Marsh, chair of the department, said the changes align with national educational trends, workforce needs for employees who can interact effectively across cultures, and growing interest among Georgia State students to study Korean, Chinese and Japanese and ongoing interest in Spanish, French, German and Arabic.

“Employers are looking for people who can demonstrate advanced language and cultural competencies, cross-cultural awareness and intercultural communication skills,” Marsh said. “These degrees will prepare students for many career options in business, governmental and non-governmental agencies, language and culture education, health professionals, hospitality and tourism, international arts, media and entertainment, and public service.”

In addition to the enhanced focus on career-readiness, the new B.A. in World Languages and Cultures program will feature multiple language concentrations including Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean and Spanish. Students will also have the option of pursuing a two-language concentration that can include any of the previously mentioned languages plus Arabic or German.

Students in the M.A. program can concentrate in World Languages and Applied Cultural Studies; French and Francophone Studies; or Spanish.

The existing foreign language programs will be phased out in favor of the new B.A. and M.A. degrees.
