Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) issued the following statement marking the end of Gun Violence Awareness Month:
“Tragically, gun violence was a constant presence in the lives of the American people, and the people of the Fifth Congressional District during Gun Violence Awareness Month. A mass shooting took place on June 1, and 62 more mass shootings followed. On Monday, a 26-year-old woman was shot dead in Atlanta over an argument about how much mayonnaise was on a sandwich. This must stop.
“During Gun Violence Awareness Month, Congress passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first major gun safety legislation in three decades. Our work answered the pleas of the American people who have said time and time again: take action to stop gun violence. While this law does not do everything I would want, I will take any steps to save lives.
“Every month I am in Congress I will push for gun safety. We live in the only country where gun violence is an everyday reality. We are here because of policy choices and the only way to move forward is with smart policy choices.”
