Atlanta United 2 suffered a significant defeat, losing 5-1 to Philadelphia Union II in their away match at Subaru Park on Thursday night. This result saw Javier Armas making his comeback after an injury, eventually scoring a consolation goal in the 85th minute.

The match opened with a quick counter-attack from Atlanta in the third minute. Armas, recovering possession deep in his half, launched a chip over the midfield aiming for Ryan Carmichael. Despite being in a potentially scoring position, Carmichael's progress was halted by goalkeeper Oliver Semmle, who preemptively cleared the ball. Cayman Togashi tried to capitalize with a follow-up lob but missed the target.

Philadelphia broke the tie in the 21st minute when David Vazquez exploited space on the left, delivering a precise chip into the box for Stas Korzeniowski. The tall forward rose above defenders to score with a looping header over Jayden Hibbert, opening the score for Philadelphia.

Atlanta sought an equalizer quickly after this setback. Nyk Sessock's deep cross connected with Rodrigo Neri, whose setup positioned Togashi for a shot. Nevertheless, Semmle was on hand to deflect the attempt.

Just before half-time, Philadelphia doubled their advantage as CJ Olney's curling cross was met with a diving header by Neil Pierre, who beat Hibbert to the ball.

Atlanta's situation worsened in the second half as Dominik Chong Qui was dismissed with a second yellow card in the 55th minute, leaving his team one player short for the remaining 35 minutes.

Even with the disadvantage, Togashi fought for another goal opportunity in the 64th minute, receiving through-ball assistance from Armas. However, his effort was thwarted by defenders before he could shoot.

Philadelphia capitalized on their numerical advantage, netting three rapid goals courtesy of Olney, Nick Pariano, and Kellen LeBlanc.

Late in the game, substitute Patrick Weah earned a penalty for Atlanta by skillfully drawing a foul in the penalty area. Armas confidently converted the subsequent spot-kick, sending Semmle the wrong way.

Atlanta United 2 currently stands at 1-2-2 with 5 points and is preparing to face Carolina Core FC at Fifth Third Stadium on April 23.
