Atlanta United returned to their training ground with a focus on refining their tactical gameplay following a recent 4-3 victory over New York City FC. Despite the win, the team conceded three goals and lagged behind 3-1 at one point during the match. Head Coach Ronny Deila, known for his vocal approach, emphasized individual and team positioning during the drills.

Deila's strategic focus on positioning was echoed by Stian Gregersen, who noted, “We have to use our 6s more instead of playing outside, because that's a trigger for the opponent.” Gregersen explained that training centered heavily on ensuring players understand their positioning to maximize readiness for matches.

Alexey Miranchuk's positional flexibility was highlighted by his recent move to a No. 8 role, aiding the team's buildup play. Reflecting on recent matches, Gregersen stated, “What Alexey did when he dropped down, especially in the second half, was brilliant.” This adjustment resulted in Atlanta United's improved performance, including scoring three goals in the second half against New York City FC.

Matt Edwards showcased his versatility by playing his third different position this season. Having experience across various defensive roles, he remains adaptable, stating, “You just want to be on the field. No matter where [Deila] asks you to play, you're willing to play there.”

Deila’s practice sessions underscored the importance of understanding the game with questions probing the players' thought processes. Assistant Coach Kenny Miller emphasized the need for players to visualize potential plays, stating, “We’ve got to have a picture in our mind, can we get out?”

Edwards highlighted the importance of this approach, saying, “No matter where [I play], I think it's important to read the game the correct way.” He emphasized understanding Deila’s style and philosophy as key to the team’s unified and effective play.

Despite the challenges, Deila’s coaching methods are slowly engraving into the players' minds, evidenced by consistent improvements in training and matches.
