Atlanta United faced Inter Miami CF at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, marking their first encounter since the unexpected defeat in the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs. Despite a strong start, Atlanta United fell to Inter Miami with a final score of 2-1.
The match began with Atlanta taking an early lead. Brooks Lennon assisted Emmanuel Latte Lath in scoring the opening goal in the 11th minute. Lennon's assist tied him with Julian Gressel for the most assists in club history. An offside call later denied Latte Lath another goal from Lennon.
Inter Miami responded quickly when Lionel Messi equalized in the 20th minute after intercepting a ball deep in Atlanta's territory and chipping it past goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
The game remained tied until Fafà Picault scored for Miami with a header from Jordi Alba's cross in the 89th minute, securing victory for Inter Miami.
Atlanta United head coach Ronny Deila acknowledged his team's mistakes: "We played against a team that hasn't lost this year... But in the end, we gave them too many easy chances."
Lionel Messi played a full match for Inter Miami and was instrumental on the field, challenging Guzan multiple times throughout.
Brooks Lennon's return marked his 200th MLS regular season start and he contributed significantly both defensively and offensively. Despite Guzan's efforts, including six saves during crucial moments, Atlanta could not secure a win.
Looking ahead, Atlanta United will travel to face FC Cincinnati on March 22 as several players prepare for international duties during FIFA's break from March 17-25.
