Pedro Amador is set to make his season debut for Atlanta United in their home match against New York Red Bulls. The Portuguese defender missed the initial two matches of the season due to a hamstring injury but is now included in the starting XI by head coach Ronny Deila.
Brooks Lennon, another fullback yet to play this season, remains unavailable. Deila indicated on Thursday that they aim for Lennon's return next weekend. "That's good news. Very good news," Deila commented.
Amador joined Atlanta United during last year's summer transfer window and quickly became a key player, starting 14 matches including all five postseason games and concluding 2024 with eight assists.
Atlanta United still lacks two fullbacks—Lennon and Ronald Hernández—but with Amador's return and Matt Edwards making his third career MLS start today, there is an increase in depth at the position. Last weekend, Atlanta fielded three center backs against Charlotte; now they are only two fullbacks short of full strength.
"All our injuries have been on the sides, in the fullbacks area, so that will give more weight in the squad," Deila stated. "They also get more tired because they have to run more, same with the wingers. To double up in these two positions is key to keep attacking and keep having good width in our game."
The starting XI for Atlanta United against New York Red Bulls includes Brad Guzan (C), Matt Edwards, Stian Gregersen, Derrick Williams, Pedro Amador, Bartosz Slisz, Tristan Muyumba, Alexey Miranchuk, Miguel Almirón, Saba Lobjanidze, and Emmanuel Latte Lath.
Reserves comprise Josh Cohen, Noah Cobb, Luis Abram, Dominik Chong Qui, Jay Fortune, Mateusz Klich, Edwin Mosquera, Xande Silva, and Cayman Togashi.
Match notes highlight Miguel Almirón being two goals shy of moving up to second place all-time in scoring for the club. The midfielder achieved his 50th goal contribution during Atlanta's recent victory over CF Montréal.
Tristan Muyumba makes his first appearance in this season's starting XI after making 30 appearances last year.
Atlanta United has an all-time record of 3-10-5 against New York Red Bulls; all wins were secured at home.
Dominik Chong Qui features on today's roster after signing a short-term agreement on Friday. Last week he debuted as a substitute against Charlotte at age 17.
Today marks International Women's Day celebrations at Atlanta United's match on March 8 with women and girls participating as national anthem singer, honorary captain among other roles while showcasing HERo Collection—a retail line made by women for women.
