Since the Atlanta Falcons drafted A.J. Terrell, finding a cornerback to play opposite him has been an ongoing discussion each offseason. With Terrell secured for the future following his contract extension in 2024, this question remains relevant.

In a series previewing free agency options, Will McFadden highlighted five cornerbacks for the Falcons to consider. Among these, Mike Hughes stands out as a logical choice due to his familiarity with the team and solid performance over the past two seasons.

Hughes joined the Falcons on a two-year deal that concludes with the start of the new league year in March. Despite financial and draft constraints, retaining Hughes could be advantageous given his effective integration into their defensive system. "The truth of the matter is that the Falcons do not have enough money or draft capital to realistically fill every hole they have defensively," states McFadden.

Although Hughes' statistics were not extraordinary, he was consistent and reliable. His coverage grades were positive according to PFF metrics, and he excelled in open-field tackling against teams like the Saints and Steelers. Next Gen Stats reveal Hughes allowed 35 receptions on 55 targets with two touchdowns and a catch-rate of 63.6%, comparable to Terrell's rate despite fewer snaps due to injury.

Initially skeptical about Hughes' role last offseason, McFadden acknowledges Raheem Morris' confidence in existing players like Hughes and Clark Phillips III was justified: "Morris was right in his assessment that they had what they needed at cornerback on the returning roster already."

Re-signing Hughes offers predictability regarding his abilities and compatibility with teammates such as Jessie Bates III at safety or Kaden Elliss at inside linebacker. This approach allows prioritization of other positions during free agency or drafts without incurring unnecessary risks: "You know exactly what you're getting with Hughes... You're not going to overpay for a gamble or unknown."

Ultimately, bringing back Mike Hughes would maintain consistency within an essential part of their defense: "Because trust, at this position, goes a long way."
