Club president and CEO Garth Lagerwey expressed appreciation for the media's professionalism during a press conference on Friday. Local reporters remained composed until Lagerwey prompted them with, “Anyone want to do it?” This led to applause from Lagerwey and chief soccer officer Chris Henderson, as they celebrated Miguel Almirón's return to Atlanta United on a designated player deal.

The event at Mercedes-Benz Stadium focused on Almirón, who filled one of two designated player slots. The executives shared a sense of joy about bringing back a player who has strong ties to the city and club. Henderson remarked, “All the things we look for in a designated player, that’s what Miguel will bring.”

Henderson had been interested in Almirón since his time with Seattle Sounders when he first scouted him nearly ten years ago. After joining Atlanta United in December, Henderson was eager to sign Almirón. He told Lagerwey, “we have to go sign Miguel.”

Lagerwey's first encounter with Almirón was at a Premier League friendly between Newcastle United and Chelsea in 2023. The fans' reaction left an impression on him that culminated in signing Almirón on January 30, 2025. Lagerwey recalled the moment: “We all remember when Miggy came in and scored the goal...the whole stadium stood up and started applauding like crazy.”

Atlanta United supporters warmly welcomed Almirón back this week, echoing their enthusiasm from that summer match. His signing brings experience and leadership to help improve upon last year's 9th-place finish in the Eastern Conference.

“When we assessed the team and what we needed, Miguel checked every box," said Henderson. His qualities align with new head coach Ronny Deila's fast-paced style of play.

Almirón is known for his speed, work ethic, and passion for soccer. He embodies leadership qualities essential for a designated player role: “He’s the type of player who sacrifices for the team,” noted Henderson.

Almirón aims to lead by example as he returns to Atlanta United at age 30: “When I arrived the first time, I was very happy...now here today...with an increased responsibility to help this team.”
