Governor Brian P. Kemp has declared a State of Emergency in Georgia due to anticipated severe winter weather conditions. The declaration, effective immediately, empowers the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) to activate the State Operations Center and mobilize resources as needed. It also allows for the deployment of up to 250 Georgia National Guard troops if necessary for preparation, response, and recovery efforts. This state of emergency will remain in effect until January 28.
"Before the full force of the incoming winter weather arrives, many Georgians are already experiencing dangerously low temperatures ahead of expected freezing precipitation on Tuesday," stated Governor Kemp. He added that preparations have been underway with state agencies, including road treatments by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) since Sunday morning.
The executive order includes measures such as prohibiting price gouging and suspending hours-of-service limitations for commercial vehicle operators involved in response activities. Additionally, it temporarily increases weight, height, and length limits for commercial vehicles transporting essential supplies.
State offices in Atlanta will be closed on January 21 to limit traffic and aid GDOT's roadway preparations. Agency officials may close other offices outside Atlanta based on local conditions.
Weather forecasts indicate potential snow accumulations across much of Georgia from Tuesday through Wednesday morning. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for 128 counties, with possible upgrades to a Winter Storm Warning later today. Residents should expect hazardous road conditions and power outages due to ice accumulation.
The GDOT began brining operations on Sunday to treat interstates and major routes statewide. Residents are advised to avoid travel where possible or exercise caution if travel is necessary.
For those affected by the cold weather, guidance includes using electric space heaters safely, insulating homes, checking vehicle readiness, keeping gas tanks at least half full, and having an emergency kit prepared.
Updates from GEMA/HS will be available online via their website and social media accounts. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local National Weather Service updates.
GEMA/HS collaborates with various governmental bodies and organizations to protect life and property during emergencies. Their Ready Georgia campaign provides resources for disaster preparedness at gema.georgia.gov/plan-prepare/ready-georgia.
