The Atlanta Falcons have concluded an interview with Don "Wink" Martindale for the position of defensive coordinator, as announced by the team on Tuesday. This marks their first official interview in their search for a new defensive leader.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero has reported that Martindale is also scheduled to meet with the Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday. Despite not coaching in the NFL during 2024, Martindale brings two decades of experience to the table, including seven years as a defensive coordinator.
Martindale's recent role was at the University of Michigan, where he served as defensive coordinator. Under his guidance, Michigan achieved a No. 11 ranking in defense within the NCAA for 2024, allowing an average of 307 yards per game and ranking similarly in yards allowed per play.
His professional journey began in college football at Defiance College in 1986 before transitioning to the NFL. His notable tenure includes roles with several teams: New York Giants (2022-23), Baltimore Ravens (2012-21), Denver Broncos (2009-10), and Oakland Raiders (2004-08).
During his time with these teams, particularly with the Ravens from 2018 to 2020, Martindale contributed to defenses that consistently ranked in the top ten for points and yards allowed. He has coached players who collectively achieved 22 Pro Bowl appearances and 10 All-Pro selections.
However, his last stint with the New York Giants was challenging. The team ranked low defensively over two seasons but led the league in takeaways in 2023. Despite these mixed results, his style was characterized as a "boom-or-bust defense."
As Martindale interviews for new opportunities, teams like the Falcons must consider whether they value aggressive playmaking or more traditional defensive strategies.
