The Atlanta Falcons concluded their 2024 season with a disappointing overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers. Head coach Raheem Morris addressed the media, expressing his dissatisfaction with the team's defensive performance. Despite this setback, Morris highlighted a source of optimism for the team: quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
Morris referred to Penix as "the light at the end of the tunnel," praising his potential despite the challenges faced by the team. The Falcons have struggled to find stability at quarterback since trading Matt Ryan in 2022. Initially turning to Kirk Cousins in March 2024, they eventually shifted focus to Penix after Cousins' performance declined.
"The organization has a quarterback that is certainly bright, that is certainly our future," Morris stated. He expressed confidence in Penix's ability to dominate in the league and contribute significantly to the team's success.
When asked about any regrets regarding not starting Penix earlier, Morris explained that he believed other aspects of the team were performing well outside of the quarterback position at that time.
As for Cousins' future with the Falcons, it remains uncertain. Morris shared that Cousins left on Monday, indicating discussions about his role will continue.
Penix's performance over three games has shown promise, with an average completion percentage of 58.77% and 737 passing yards. While there is room for improvement, particularly in finesse and touch on throws, his strong arm and connection with receiver Drake London are notable strengths.
Looking ahead, Morris emphasized Penix's importance to the Falcons' future: "When you've got a young quarterback like that, you're cooking with gas."
