Governor Brian P. Kemp has instructed state agencies in Georgia to prepare for an impending winter storm expected to affect the state later this week. Agencies involved include the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS), the Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS), and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). These organizations are working together with local and state officials to assess conditions and ensure public safety.

"As with any weather system that might impact Georgia communities, we are actively monitoring the approaching winter storm and taking action now to ensure our communities are prepared for any possible impact," said Governor Brian Kemp. "Along with state agency leaders, I'm urging Georgians to stay weather aware, especially as they make plans for the coming days. Please make necessary arrangements to keep your family safe and stay tuned for more information as this storm approaches."

The current forecast predicts a significant winter weather event across north and central Georgia starting Friday, with rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow expected. Temperatures will hover near freezing from Friday morning through Saturday evening, potentially resulting in several inches of snow and ice accumulation in certain areas.

Hazardous travel conditions are anticipated on untreated roadways, bridges, and overpasses during this period. Light winds on Friday will increase by Saturday afternoon, possibly leading to downed trees and power lines due to accumulated snow and ice.

State preparations include GDOT vehicles beginning road brining operations on Thursday north of I-20. The Motor Carrier Compliance Division is collaborating with GDOT for safe transport across affected regions into northern Georgia.

Residents should remain informed about warming centers' locations through local officials. Winter preparedness guidance includes checking home insulation, having backup heat sources ready, ensuring vehicles are equipped for cold weather conditions, carrying emergency kits in cars, using generators safely outdoors, allowing pipes to drip or insulating them against freezing temperatures, keeping pets indoors, and checking on vulnerable relatives or neighbors.

For ongoing updates regarding the storm's progress and related advisories from GEMA/HS via its website or social media accounts is encouraged along with monitoring National Weather Service bulletins.
