The Atlanta Falcons are facing a challenging path to the playoffs as the NFL regular season draws to a close. Currently holding an 8-8 record, the Falcons find themselves out of playoff contention following their recent loss to the Washington Commanders, who stand at 11-5. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' victory has further complicated Atlanta's chances by pushing them out of the top NFC South spot.

Prior to last week's game, NFL.com reported that the Falcons had a 54% chance of securing a postseason berth. However, this probability has now decreased significantly to just 11%. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers are in a favorable position with an 89% likelihood of making it to the playoffs.

For the Falcons to overcome these odds and secure a playoff spot, they must win their final regular-season game against the Carolina Panthers, who currently have a 4-12 record. Additionally, they need the Buccaneers to lose their home game against the New Orleans Saints, who hold a 5-11 record. Both games are scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

As only one playoff spot remains available in the NFC, attention is focused on how these scenarios will unfold within the NFC South division.

Here is an overview of potential first-round matchups:

- No. 1 Detroit Lions (14-2) — bye

- No. 7 Green Bay Packers (11-5) vs. No. 2 Philadelphia Eagles (13-3)

- No. 6 Washington Commanders (11-5) vs. No. 3 Los Angeles Rams (10-6)

- No. 5 Minnesota Vikings (14-2) vs. No. 4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7)
