Ronny Deila has officially taken on his new role as head coach of Atlanta United. Arriving at the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground in Marietta during the first week of January, Deila's appointment was announced on December 20.
The Norwegian manager, with a 17-year career, brings an impressive record, having won six trophies, including four league titles and two domestic cup competitions. "We really wanted to add a proven winner, and Ronny exudes that," stated club president & CEO Garth Lagerwey. He expressed enthusiasm about working with Deila due to his focus on building relationships and leadership.
Chief Soccer Officer & Sporting Director Chris Henderson also praised Deila for his ability to connect with players. "Building that trust, having fun and creating an environment where players want to come in, learn, and grow every day is something that wins championships and brings teams together in success," he said.
This marks Deila's second stint as a head coach in Major League Soccer (MLS). He previously led New York City FC to victory in the MLS Cup in 2021 after defeating Portland Timbers on penalties. His coaching history spans various leagues beyond MLS.
Deila emphasized teamwork as a core aspect of his management style. "One of my strengths is that I'm good at working together with people," he remarked. "My job is 60-70 percent to be a leader, being together with people and leading them."
Before arriving in Atlanta, Deila was already familiar with the club from previous encounters while managing in MLS. Now leading Atlanta United, he looks forward to capitalizing on their opportunities for success. "I played against Atlanta before. I know what kind of fans they have... This is a dream to have an opportunity to come here and work with you," Deila shared.
