Atlanta United is gearing up for a transformative offseason following their unexpected journey in the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs. The club is in the process of hiring a new head coach and sporting director, with President and CEO Garth Lagerwey emphasizing the importance of finding experienced leaders with a track record of success.
Lagerwey confirmed that interim head coach Rob Valentino will not be considered for the permanent position despite his commendable performance. "I can't thank him enough for what he did with our group," Lagerwey stated, acknowledging Valentino's role in leading Atlanta United to its sixth playoff appearance.
The search for a new head coach has attracted interest from various candidates globally. Lagerwey expressed confidence in securing a capable leader: "What is maybe not clear at the moment is just how desirable it is to work for Atlanta United."
The club also needs to fill the sporting director position, previously held by Carlos Bocanegra. Lagerwey aims to finalize both hires before Christmas, ensuring compatibility between the two roles. "We'll get it buttoned up here in the next couple of weeks," he said.
In player-related news, veteran goalkeeper Brad Guzan will return for his ninth year with Atlanta United. Lagerwey praised Guzan's leadership during critical moments in the playoffs: "Brad beat Miami," he remarked, highlighting Guzan's impact on team morale.
Atlanta United plans to retain 22 players moving into 2025 but acknowledges areas needing reinforcement due to injuries and expiring contracts. "Broadly speaking, we're going to add a defender and an attacker," Lagerwey noted, pointing out available Designated Player spots.
Reflecting on the 2024 season, which ended with a 10-14-10 record and a ninth-place finish in the Eastern Conference, Lagerwey recognized both achievements and shortcomings. He stressed the need for consistent performance throughout future seasons: "We need to clear-eyed look at the whole picture and move forward."
Looking ahead, Lagerwey aims to establish stability within Atlanta United as they prepare for 2025. A highlight of their recent campaign was hosting over 68,000 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium during Game 2 against Miami—a testament to growing support for playoff soccer in Atlanta.
"We'll be a work in progress," Lagerwey concluded, emphasizing aspirations to build upon their recent success as they strive towards championship contention.
