Atlanta United falls to first-place L.A. Galaxy

Atlanta United traveled to the West Coast to face L.A. Galaxy on August 25, 2024. The starting XI for Atlanta United included Brad Guzan (C), Brooks Lennon, Stian Gregersen, Derrick Williams, Pedro Amador, Bartosz Slisz, Jay Fortune, Dax McCarty (Alexey Miranchuk - 61'), Saba Lobjanidze (Tyler Wolff - 81'), Xande Silva (Edwin Mosquera - 72'), and Jamal Thiaré (Daniel Ríos - 72'). Substitutes available were Josh Cohen, Luis Abram, Luke Brennan, Noah Cobb, and Matt Edwards.

L.A. Galaxy's starting XI featured John McCarthy, Miki Yamane (Mauricio Cuevas - 86'), Maya Yoshida (C), John Nelson, Jalen Neal, Diego Fagundez (Miguel Berry - 62'), Mark Delgado (Marco Reus - 62'), Riqui Puig, Edwin Cerrillo (Gaston Brugman - 61'), Gabriel Pec, and Joseph Paintsil. Available substitutes included Dejan Jovelijic, Eriq Zavaleta, Tucker Lepley, Brady Scott, and Isaiah Parente.

The scoring was initiated by L.A. Galaxy's Riqui Puig in the 76th minute with an assist from Marco Reus. Reus himself scored in the 84th minute to secure a 2-0 victory for L.A. Galaxy over Atlanta United.

Disciplinary actions during the match saw Joseph Paintsil of L.A. Galaxy receive a yellow card at the 46th minute. Atlanta United’s Jay Fortune was booked in the 65th minute and Riqui Puig received a yellow card in the 71st minute.

Roster notes indicated that Pedro Amador made his MLS debut for Atlanta United. Alexey Miranchuk also debuted as a substitute under interim head coach Rob Valentino after arriving in Atlanta last weekend and beginning training on Tuesday.

Noah Cobb returned to the bench following international duty at the Concacaf U-20 Championships with the U.S. youth national team. This match marked Atlanta United's first game since the Leagues Cup break and is one of nine remaining matches in their regular season schedule.

Two players were ruled out for Saturday’s match according to the Availability Report presented by Piedmont.
