FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- NFL Draft pundits often compare upcoming draft class players with current players at their position, known as player comparisons. In light of the recent news of the Atlanta Falcons acquiring pass rusher Matthew Judon—pending a physical—this practice takes on new significance.

In August 2023, well before Bralen Trice was drafted and during Judon's ascent, CBS Sports' Ryan Wilson compared Trice's play to that of Judon’s. Wilson highlighted the strength both players possess.

"Bralen Trice is relentless," Wilson wrote. "His primary pass-rush move, the bull rush, requires continuous effort and energy for all four quarters because it's essentially just putting the shoulder down and blowing through offensive linemen."

This description mirrors Judon's playing style characterized by strength, power, and relentless pursuit of the quarterback. The comparison becomes more pertinent considering Trice's season-ending knee injury and the Falcons' acquisition of Judon. The team needed to fill the gap left by Trice’s absence in their pass rush.

The inclusion of Judon in the Falcons' defensive unit raises expectations for their pass rush performance. As a four-time Pro Bowler with over 60 career sacks (32 in the last two-and-a-half years), Judon's presence is expected to make a significant impact. He was voted the 33rd-best player by his peers going into the 2023 season despite suffering a torn bicep that year.

Judon's addition should benefit the entire defensive front, including interior players Grady Jarrett and David Onyemata. His presence forces opposing offensive lines to adjust to account for his pressure from the edge.

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris stated Thursday morning that they are not committing to a long-term deal with Judon yet; he is currently in the final year of his contract with New England. Morris likened this move to when the Los Angeles Rams acquired Von Miller a few years ago.

"You never know what these things can turn into," Morris said, "but I know what we are getting."

What they are getting in Judon is a powerful pass rusher whose presence elevates expectations for this defense.
