ATLANTA – State Representative Lauren Daniel (R-Locust Grove) stood alongside Governor Brian Kemp as he signed House Bill 409, now officially known as Addy’s Law. The legislation was named in honor of Adalynn Pierce, an eight-year-old from Henry County who tragically lost her life while crossing the road to board her school bus. Addy’s family, who were present at the signing ceremony, expressed their gratitude to Rep. Daniel for her unwavering advocacy in advancing this crucial law.

"Today marked a pivotal milestone in Georgia’s dedication to prioritizing the safety of our young students and honoring the memory of a precious little girl," remarked Rep. Daniel. She continued, stating that "Addy’s Law represents a crucial stride in our commitment to protecting Georgia’s children, and I am profoundly grateful to Governor Kemp and my legislative colleagues for their support." Rep. Daniel also shared her hope that the new law will prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Addy’s Law mandates that public school systems prioritize bus routes that avoid students crossing roadways with a speed limit exceeding 40 miles per hour. Additionally, the law introduces stricter penalties for passing a stopped school bus picking up children, making it a high and aggravated misdemeanor with a fine of at least $1,000 and possible confinement of at least 12 months upon conviction. The bill also includes provisions to send the tag information to the owner’s insurance carrier in cases of repeat violations.

The enactment of Addy’s Law signifies a significant step towards enhancing the safety of Georgia’s children and preventing further tragedies like the one that befell Adalynn Pierce.
