State Representative Carl Gilliard (D-Savannah) expressed his gratitude for the support of his colleagues in passing House Bill 1425, which aims to create the Weeping Time Cultural Heritage Corridor Authority. Rep. Gilliard emphasized the importance of preserving the memory and heritage of the Weeping Time and Weeping Time Corridor in Savannah, GA. He stated, "I am grateful to my colleagues for joining me in sharing their support for creating this authority and remembrance of these dark days in our nation’s history."

The Weeping Time refers to the tragic events of March 2 and 3, 1859, when more than 400 enslaved Africans were sold in Savannah, marking the largest sale of slaves in U.S. history. These individuals were forcibly separated from their families and dispersed across the country to settle a gambling debt and maintain the wealth of plantation owners.

HB 1425 outlines the creation of a five-member authority, appointed by members of the Georgia Senate and House representing Chatham County. Each member would serve a two-year term, dedicated to acknowledging and preserving the memory of the atrocities of the Weeping Time.

The passing of this legislation signifies a significant step towards honoring and remembering the painful history of slavery in the United States, particularly in Savannah, Georgia.
