GA US HOUSE DISTRICT 5: Congresswoman Nikema Williams’ Response to Supreme Court Decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization

GA US House District 5 issued the following announcement on June 24.

Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05), Whip of the Democratic Women’s Caucus and a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case:

“An extremist Supreme Court decided to strip more than half the country of our right to abortion. Today’s decision is cruel and does not reflect the will of the people. More Americans support abortion rights now than at any point in our history. The people who will suffer the most from this decision come from marginalized communities. Black people account for 65% of all abortions in Georgia. The percentage of Black people who have obtained abortions has dramatically increased over the last 20 years–a reflection of how essential reproductive healthcare is for our communities. When I worked for Planned Parenthood, I saw the sacrifices many of those people made to get the care they needed and the critical nature of full reproductive freedom. Now, people’s health, livelihoods, and futures have been jeopardized by the Supreme Court.

“I have and will continue to lead Congressional efforts to protect access to abortion. I introduced the most recent, significant legislation in support of abortion rights and access to essential healthcare, with 125 of my colleagues cosponsoring my resolution. I also co-sponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act, which passed the House of Representatives and now is stalled by Senate obstructionism. House Democrats will keep working with the Biden-Harris Administration to explore every possible administrative action to ensure access to abortion, while overcoming Senate obstruction.”
