Several metro school districts announced all classes will be canceled on Friday to allow students to celebrate the Atlanta Braves winning the World Series championship.
A parade and other celebratory events are planned across the city during the day on Friday, Nov. 5.
In Cobb County, officials with both districts said they hope the school holiday will help reduce anticipated traffic headaches, though all Friday night athletic events will go on as scheduled.
“Due to the logistical challenges associated with the anticipated traffic, road closures, and crowds expected throughout metro Atlanta for the parade honoring our World Series Champion @Braves, APS will observe a district holiday and be closed on Friday,” the Atlanta Public Schools tweeted. “This is a non-school day for students and will be a paid holiday for all full-time APS employees. APS shares in the excitement of the World Series victory by our Atlanta Braves and congratulates the entire organization for a fantastic and historic season!”
Not every one shared in the excitement of school closing for the parade.
“This ridiculous and inappropriate," Michael Elefante tweeted. "I love the braves but I’m going to work and continue my responsibilities. We can certainly make adjustments to time to accommodate any changes needed for the parade but canceling school makes no sense.”
The Braves captured their first World Series since 1995 by defeating the Houston Astros in six games. The parade will begin at 12 noon in Atlanta at the intersection of Peachtree and Marietta Streets and reach Cobb County by 2 p.m. and proceed on Riverwood Parkway and Cumberland Parkway
A ticketed celebration will be held inside Truist Park between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
