Brave new world: Atlanta celebrates first World Series title since 1995

At first, the Atlanta Braves didn't succeed, so they tried again and prevailed.

Two nights after the Houston Astros postponed their World Series coronation, the Braves pummeled Houston 7-0 in Game 6 at Minute Maid Park to celebrate in enemy territory.

The team's No. 1 fan, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, excitedly proclaimed the news on social media.

"The @Braves win the WORLD SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!" Bottoms Tweeted.

As they had done for much of the Fall Classic, Atlanta's bats overwhelmed the Astros' starter for the evening, with Game 6 being no different.

It was deja vu of sorts for series MVP Jorge Soler, who homered off Framber Valdez to become the first player to hit a leadoff World Series home run, as the 29-year-old Cuban slugger knocked a three-shot HR that caused Luis Garcia's exit from the mound.

MLB.com reported that Soler, who came to the Braves via a trade with the Kansas City Royals over the summer, smashed a total of three go-ahead homers to secure the Willie Mays World Series MVP Award presented by Chevrolet.

The fifth was a scoring clinic put on by the visitors. Shortstop Dansby Swanson blasted an HR of his own while first baseman Freddie Freeman, who probably played his last game in a Braves uniform, smacked an RBI double to widen the lead to a comfortable 5-0.

Freeman, who is expected to enter free agency, then delivered the go-ahead HR in the seventh.

The heroics of Soler, Swanson, and Freeman complemented starter Max Fried's magnificent performance.

According to MLB.com, Fried translated six innings into no earned runs, six fanned Astros, and four hits surrendered.

The 2021 World Series crown is the franchise's first since the Clinton administration and second since its move to Atlanta from Milwaukee about 50 years ago.

In all, the Braves have four Fall Classic wins, WSB reported.
