FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The New Orleans Saints may face significant changes following quarterback Derek Carr's reported shoulder injury. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Carr's condition threatens his participation in the 2025 NFL season and may lead to surgery.

Carr, who joined the Saints under a four-year, $150 million contract in 2023, had his deal restructured this offseason. His projected status remains uncertain as his agreement is set to expire at the end of the 2026 season.

This development coincides with the start of the Saints' voluntary offseason workout program, which began last Monday. Spencer Rattler, drafted by the Saints last year and who played a critical role during Carr's injuries, is presumed to be participating in the current workouts.

Moreover, the 2025 NFL Draft is approaching, presenting a crucial decision point as the Saints hold the No. 9 pick. They have shown interest in this year's quarterback class, with Head Coach Kellen Moore attending several key prospects' pro days.

One option on the table, in addition to relying on Rattler, is the acquisition of a veteran quarterback. Available prospects include Aaron Rodgers, Carson Wentz, Ryan Tannehill, and Tyler Huntley. Kirk Cousins is another possibility, although his current team, the Atlanta Falcons, is prepared to retain him as a backup. Despite Cousins' preference to start, an agreement involving all parties seems challenging due to team rivalries.

If Carr's shoulder improves and he remains fit for the season, the Saints may not need further changes. However, Carr's uncertain status keeps NFC South teams on alert. The Falcons have Michael Penix Jr. as their starting quarterback, while the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have Byrce Young and Baker Mayfield, respectively.

Since Carr's tenure began in 2023, he has led the Saints to mixed results, including a 14-13 record as starter. His first season stats labeled him as second in the division standings only to the Buccaneers. Carr's performance was hindered in 2024 by various injuries, contributing to the Saints finishing at the bottom of the division.
