Thursday's training session for Atlanta United saw a unique approach as head coach Ronny Deila adopted a lighter style that emphasized skills and team-building activities. The session was designed with player load management in mind following the return of athletes from international duty.

Center back Derrick Williams noted the competitive nature of the session, stating, "It gets heated... you need to train as you play, so they're intense." Deila explained that Thursdays are for "restitution," aiming to keep players sharp yet relaxed before matches.

Atlanta United's focus turns to a three-match homestand starting on March 29. The first game sees them host New York City FC at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This game is significant for Deila, who previously coached New York City FC and led them to an MLS Cup title in 2021.

Both Atlanta United and NYCFC returned from recent draws against conference opponents. Derrick Williams expressed confidence about their upcoming match, stating, “New York is a good team, but I feel like if we play how we can play, we should get the three points."

The return of ten players from international duty, including league-high contributions from the first team, bolsters Atlanta's roster. Notably, local product Will Reilly impressed with his performance, leading to a high ranking in possession regains.

Deila remains focused on incorporating and motivating young, Homegrown talent, such as winger Luke Brennan, who may feature in the upcoming match. "We need to have these Homegrown young players," Deila commented.

Training on Thursday also included position-specific drills aimed at reinforcing individual skills and strategies. Assistant coaches emphasized intensity and adaptability, crucial for maintaining strong performances throughout an entire match. As Atlanta United prepares for Matchday 6 in the MLS season, Deila stresses the need for consistent performances and aims for three consecutive home victories.
