Atlanta United has announced the return of midfielder Miguel Almirón on a designated player deal through 2027, with an option for 2028. This marks Almirón's second stint with the club, having previously played for Atlanta United from 2017 to 2018. During his initial tenure, he was instrumental in the team's MLS Cup victory in 2018.
After his success in Major League Soccer (MLS), Almirón transferred to Newcastle United in the English Premier League at the beginning of 2019. The transfer set a record for MLS at that time. Over six seasons with Newcastle, Almirón made 186 appearances and scored 23 goals, including a notable performance against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
Almirón's connection with Atlanta remains strong. In a recent match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium during Newcastle's summer tour, he received a warm reception from fans. Reflecting on this experience, Almirón expressed his appreciation: “I feel so much warmth from the fans, and I have so much love for the fans as well."
Almirón initially joined Atlanta United in December 2016 and quickly became known for his speed and playmaking abilities. He finished second in MLS MVP voting in 2018 after scoring 12 goals and providing 14 assists that season.
The club has undergone changes since Almirón's departure, including new leadership and roster updates. However, Chief Soccer Officer Chris Henderson is optimistic about Almirón's return: “We’re thrilled to welcome Miguel back to Atlanta United and know we’re getting a top player and someone with excellent character.”
As he prepares to rejoin Atlanta United under head coach Ronny Deila’s vision of an aggressive team, Almirón looks forward to contributing to the club's future successes: “I’m very happy to return to Atlanta United...and creating more moments of joy together.”
