Three faculty members from Georgia Tech have been named 2024 ACM Fellows, recognized for their notable contributions to the field of computing. Professors Michael Bailey, Dana Randall, and Thad Starner were among 55 individuals honored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for their "transformative contributions to computing science and technology."
ACM President Yannis Ioannidis remarked on the significance of these recognitions: "Computing technology has had a tremendous impact in shaping how we live and work today. The ACM Fellows program honors the creativity and hard work of ACM members whose specific accomplishments drive innovation and make broader advances possible."
Michael Bailey, who is the founding chair of the School of Cybersecurity and Privacy at Georgia Tech, was acknowledged for his "contributions to cybersecurity and internet measurement." He has authored over 90 papers focusing on performance and security in complex distributed systems.
Dana Randall holds joint appointments in both the School of Computer Science and the School of Mathematics. Her fellowship acknowledges her "contributions to the theory of Markov chains and programmable active matter," with research spanning randomized algorithms, stochastic processes, computer science, discrete mathematics, and statistical physics.
Thad Starner is a professor in the School of Interactive Computing. His recognition as an ACM Fellow highlights his "contributions to and leadership in the wearable computing research community." His work integrates wearable technologies with artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, and human-computer interaction.
All three professors are longstanding members of ACM. The selection process for 2024 Fellows involved recognizing those who have significantly contributed to making current computing technologies possible.
College of Computing Dean Vivek Sarkar extended congratulations: "We congratulate Michael Bailey, Dana Randall, and Thad Starner on this significant achievement. Their contributions to the field of computing have not only advanced knowledge but have also benefited society.”
Sarkar further emphasized pride in having such distinguished colleagues within Georgia Tech: “We are fortunate to have such distinguished colleagues from different schools in our College. Their achievements are a source of pride for us at Georgia Tech and will continue to inspire future generations of computer scientists."
The new fellows will be formally recognized at ACM's annual awards banquet scheduled for June 14 in San Francisco. More information about these honorees can be found on the ACM Fellows website.
