The Atlanta Falcons have concluded their search for a new defensive coordinator, opting for a familiar face. Jeff Ulbrich, who was the New York Jets' defensive coordinator at the start of the 2024 season before stepping in as interim head coach, will return to Atlanta. This decision carries historical significance for the team.

The Falcons parted ways with head coach Dan Quinn after five games into the 2020 season due to an underperforming defense. At that time, Raheem Morris took over as interim head coach and appointed Ulbrich to lead the defensive unit. Together, they worked on game plans, with Ulbrich focusing on early-down strategies and Morris on third-down packages.

"He's able to coordinate those things in that room, so it's a very comfortable move for us," Morris said about Ulbrich's appointment in 2020. "It's very comfortable between me and him. We're very tied together on what we want to do and how we want to do it."

Under their guidance, Atlanta's defense improved significantly. From Weeks 6-17 of the 2020 season, they allowed an average of 23 points per game, ranking 14th in the NFL. They also improved in red-zone efficiency and overall defensive performance.

In a similar fashion, the 2024 Falcons saw improvements after their bye week. The pass rush notably strengthened from recording just ten sacks in the first eleven weeks to registering twenty-one sacks from Weeks 13-18.

Morris' previous success with the Rams in 2021 included ranking fifth in touchdowns allowed and third in both sacks and interceptions during their Super Bowl-winning season. Similarly, Ulbrich led a strong Jets defense during the 2022-23 seasons.

Both coaches have proven records individually and collectively point to past successes as reasons why this partnership could succeed again.

Ulbrich's appointment gives Atlanta's head coach a trusted coordinator known for his successful track record. His history as a player and positive reputation should help build upon the culture established by Morris.

The lesson from 2024 is clear: expectations must translate into results. As such, all eyes are on Morris and his team to see if this decision proves right.
