The Atlanta Falcons are set to kick off their 2024 season at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Several key storylines are emerging as the home opener approaches.

Injury updates

The Falcons enter Week 1 with a mostly healthy roster, save for Antonio Hamilton Sr., who suffered a groin injury during practice and will not play. Head coach Raheem Morris confirmed that other key players like Kyle Pitts and Nate Landman are cleared to return, along with Kirk Cousins and Avery Williams, who have recovered from previous injuries.

The question of Russell Wilson's status

Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback Russell Wilson has been designated as questionable due to calf tightness. "I've been feeling great – honestly," Wilson said. "Just kind of felt a little funny yesterday." Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin previously joked about preparing for both Wilson and Justin Fields, which may now be necessary given Wilson's uncertain status.

The Kirk Cousins, Zac Robinson debut

Veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins is set to make his return from an Achilles injury. "In a sick way, you do (want) to get popped," Cousins said about getting back into the game. Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson will also make his debut calling plays in a regular-season game.

Arthur Smith returns to the Benz

Former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith will call plays for the Steelers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the first time since leaving Atlanta. Smith described his new role as "refreshing" and aims to maintain a neutral mindset facing his former team.

Immediate impact of Matthew Judon, Justin Simmons

Recent acquisitions Matthew Judon and Justin Simmons are expected to start on Sunday. Jessie Bates III expressed confidence in Simmons' presence: "It puts you at peace of mind to be able to go and play faster."

Player of the Game prediction: Bijan Robinson

Second-year running back Bijan Robinson is anticipated to have a significant impact this season after accumulating nearly 1,500 total yards in his rookie year. Analyst Ben Solak predicts Robinson could lead the league in rushing yards this season.
