State Representative Eric Bell (D-Jonesboro) is set to host an “Epilepsy Train-A-Thon” event in Clayton County on Thursday, March 28, 2024, aimed at raising awareness about epilepsy and equipping participants with skills on seizure first aid.

“The Epilepsy-Train-A-Thon seeks to bridge the gap by providing comprehensive training to participants, ensuring they are well-prepared to assist individuals experiencing seizures in their schools and communities,” said Rep. Bell. “Participants will undergo hands-on training exercises and simulations to reinforce their learning and build confidence in their ability to respond effectively to seizure emergencies. Through events like the Epilepsy Train-A-Thon, we can equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to support those living with epilepsy and promote inclusivity and understanding.”

Aly Clift, Executive Director of the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia, highlighted the importance of Senate Bill 45, known as AJ’s Law, which ensures students in Georgia receive care for epilepsy or a seizure disorder while attending school. The law allows physicians and parents to provide schools with a seizure action plan for children being treated for a seizure disorder.

Reflecting on his own journey with epilepsy, AJ Taylor shared, “At 14, when I was diagnosed with epilepsy, I had no idea that one day I would be able to use those life experiences to impact the next generation of students. AJ’s law makes sure that kids and families with epilepsy disorders do not have to wonder who will have their back. With education we can beat the fear and stigma together.”

The Epilepsy Train-A-Thon is a collaborative effort involving the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia, the Student Emergency Assistance nonprofit, and Morehouse School of Medicine Epilepsy Board. The event is scheduled two days after the annual “Purple Day” and will feature guest speaker AJ Taylor, for whom Governor Kemp named “AJ’s Law.”

The event is free and open to individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels, including school personnel. Participants will receive certification in Seizure First Aid upon completion of the training.

Those interested in attending the Epilepsy Train-A-Thon can join Rep. Eric Bell on Thursday, March 28, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the S. Truett Cathy Professional Learning Center located at 1087 Battle Creek Road, Jonesboro, GA 30236.
