WASHINGTON – On June 08, 2023, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05), Co-Chair of the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus issued the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Alabama must redraw congressional district maps that discriminated against Black voters:

“This Supreme Court decision is a victory for democracy and voters, affirming the continued need for the Voting Rights Act’s protections against racial gerrymandering in redistricting. These protections are still needed in 2023 and beyond as evidenced by the rejected congressional maps in Alabama. This ruling brings us closer to ensuring that Black voices will fully be heard at the ballot box, restoring their power to elect leaders who truly represent them in Congress.

“My friend, mentor, and predecessor the late Congressman John Lewis nearly died in pursuit of the Voting Rights Act. Now it’s time to strengthen it by passing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which fully restores the Voting Rights Act and the promise of full representation for everyone no matter your ZIP Code.”
