The Georgia Coalition for Housing Opportunity (GCHO) is proud to support HB 517 and HB 514, legislation introduced by Representative Dale Washburn, R-Macon, which will address the affordable housing crisis in Georgia and encourage sustainable workforce housing solutions across the state.
Record economic development and investments across the state have kept Georgia the number one state to do business for nine years in a row. This record economic growth has increased the need for skilled workers, and it is clear that the status quo is not meeting the consumer demand for quality workforce housing. For every two jobs created, one new housing unit is necessary – and the current housing supply cannot keep up with this demand. While laws and regulations on the books today prevent private sector involvement, resulting in higher prices and lack of affordable housing, HB 517 and HB 514 will allow job creators to effectively innovate, invest, and meet the needs of Georgia consumers.
“With a statewide shortage of workforce housing, varying housing regulations at every street corner, and skyrocketing prices that are stifling the middle class, 1.4 million Georgian families are struggling to find reliable, affordable housing,” said Chris Clark, President and CEO of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Georgia Coalition for Housing Opportunity. “HB 517 and HB 514 will cut government red tape, encourage private sector innovation, and increase access to safe, affordable housing for every Georgian. We commend Representative Washburn for his leadership on this issue, and look forward to working with Governor Kemp, Lieutenant Governor Jones, Speaker Burns, and the entire General Assembly to get this done and solve this pressing issue facing Georgia residents.”
