The attorney for a man seen on video being attacked and beaten in his Camden County jail cell by as many as five prison guards is pushing for authorities to pursue criminal charges in the case.
In a recent report by Fox 5 Atlanta, Civil rights attorney Harry Daniels recommended authorities pursue criminal charges against the sheriff's deputies who swarmed Hobbs, who is Black, after being booked for traffic violations and drug possession charges.
"It’s undeniable that Mr. Hobbs was approached by jailers and he was assaulted, punched multiple times in the back of his head, kneed in his head and dragged out of his cell," Daniels told FOX 5 Atlanta. "This is a brutal beating, a brutal attack."
Hobbs was taken into custody on Sept. 3. While he was also charged with fighting with officers that same day, no action had been taken against the officers involved in the jail cell fight before Hobbs’ attorney went public with video of the incident.
According to the report, federal court records assert guards entered Hobbs’ cell because he was repeatedly kicking his cell door and causing a disturbance, with video capturing a guard rushing into his space and grabbing him around the neck and pushing him into a corner as at least four other guards converge on the scene.
As jailers tried to hold Hobbs by his wrists, one of them starts punching him in the back of the head and neck, FOX 5 reports. The video shows at least two other guards throwing punches. A second video from a camera outside the cell shows jailers dragging Hobbs through the open door and pushing him against a wall.
